In the Old testament – tithing is taught as an obligation, as so many of the 600 plus rules were – It was a legal issue that was rigid, hard and challenging – Remember last week when we talked about taking on Jesus’ yoke – how it’s light – how it’s easy?
Well this is where the rubber hits the road. We do not discount the Old Testament – but we do honor above all else, the teachings of Jesus. As a result, like everything regarding Jesus – it is a matter of our heart!
So you might ask, how does the Old testament Law relate to us in this New Testament, New Covenant church?
Take a look at Romans 7:4 “Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God.”
We have been made dead to the law through Jesus – not freed from the need to give – but freed from the obligation to give! We are released from the bondage of the law so that we might do good and leave good behind us in our path of life! We have died as a captive and we have a new life in the way of the Spirit of God!
Galatians 2:19 says…”For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. ”
