Let Go & Hold On
I truly believe that God has called us to be a people who live intentionally, who don’t believe God wants us to simply react to life. Certainly we can’t control everything, but we can take more ownership of our lives than we’ve ever believed. And we can do beautiful things with them. We can LAUNCH a New Life!
I want you to join us on this journey of taking ownership of our lives rather than being victims to it. Today, I’d like to start a series to LAUNCH us into a successful year. Let’s take a look at 5 antonyms that will help us be highly intentional in our daily lives and prioritize our lives for success.
You were designed to change.
Every healthy thing God created changes.
To let go – we have to simultaneously hold on to something…or we simply fall and fail!
For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.
Nobody changes over night. But nobody changes at all if they don’t believe they’re supposed to.
Let Go and Hold On
Transformation is not about trying harder or having a better life. God’s plan for us is bigger than simple moralism.
There is no trying involved. Real change doesn’t happen because we “do,” but because God has “done.” So let me share three principles about the change we all need,as we hold on and let go.
Real Change Starts with a New Life, not Turning Over a New Leaf.
2 Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come”.
Real change always involves something old passing away (Letting Go) and something new taking its place (Holding On).
Religion says, ’I obey; therefore I am accepted.’ A Gospel-Centered, Gospel-Changed life says, ‘I’m accepted, therefore I obey.’”
Ecclesiastes 1:12-18 I, the Teacher, was king of Israel, and I lived in Jerusalem. I devoted myself to search for understanding and to explore by wisdom everything being done under heaven. I soon discovered that God has dealt a tragic existence to the human race. I observed everything going on under the sun, and really, it is all meaningless—like chasing the wind. What is wrong cannot be made right. What is missing cannot be recovered.
I said to myself, “Look, I am wiser than any of the kings who ruled in Jerusalem before me. I have greater wisdom and knowledge than any of them.” So I set out to learn everything from wisdom to madness and folly. But I learned firsthand that pursuing all this is like chasing the wind. The greater my wisdom, the greater my grief.
With access to wisdom, finances, power, and everything you could possibly hope for in life, Solomon found life to be no more than chasing the wind. He needed something new to hold onto rather than hanging on to something old.
In John 3, Jesus teaches of the need to be “born again” (John 3:3). We don’t need more rules – we need a new life.
Letting Go and Hanging On is a Process, not a Destination.
Philippians 1:6, “I am sure of this, that He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus”.
Peter wrote in 2 Peter 1:5; “By these He has given us very great and precious promises, so that through them you may share in the divine nature, escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desires”.
God shares His “divine nature” with us.
Real transformation – real change happens in a moment to secure us eternally, but it is consistently happening minute by minute to change us daily.
Real Change is Grabbing Hold and Letting Go
God doesn’t force us to change, but He does call us to change.
But that isn’t what you learned about Christ. Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.
We are called to Let Go of the “old us” and Take Hold of the “new us.”
We are stubborn – We are stuck – We are comfortable – – We are afraid
What do you need to Let Go of, so that you can Grab Hold of all God wants for you?
