The Big Deal 4 – February 22, 2015
The Big Deal – Week Three – Serving Others Matthew 20:28
Matthew 20:26-28 If you want to be great, you must be the servant of all the others. And if you want to be first, you must be the slave of the rest. The Son of Man did not come to be a slave master, but a slave who will give his life to rescue many people.
Real significance is not measured by the size of your investment portfolio, your house, your vehicle – but by the lives that you impact, the ways that you serve others. All success consists in this: You are doing something for somebody – benefiting humanity – and the feeling of success comes from the consciousness of this.
The key to lasting significance and meaning in life is not how other people treat you, or how you are served, it is how you serve others.
There are a lot of reasons why serving is a BIG DEAL at Sugar Hill Church – One reason is that it’s been scientifically proven that serving prevents stagnation…and healthy things grow, they change, they move toward God…day by day.
1) In LIFE – Serving others keeps us from getting in a rut & staying self focused.
2) In HEALTH – Serving others keeps us healthier & younger.
3) In FAITH – Serving others keeps our faith fresh & our attitude healthy
The key to lasting significance and meaning in life is not how other people treat you, or how you are served, it is how you serve others. n So another reason serving is a BIG DEAL is that The Bible says it is!
Listen to what Paul – author of most of the New Testament said in a letter he wrote to the Philippians 2:3-4 – Don’t be selfish; don’t live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Don’t think only about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and what they are doing.
In other words – choose to Be the busboy rather than the boss…in your attitude of service.
Philippians 2:5-8 – Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God. He made himself nothing; he took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form. And in human form he obediently humbled himself even further by dying a criminal’s death on a cross.
You see, another reason serving is a big deal is that Jesus said it was a BIG DEAL.
Jesus DID NOT come to earth as a king, though he could have. He did not come as president; nor as CEO of a fortune 500 company, or the head of Apple. He came as a servant.
Matthew 20:28 – For even I, the Son of Man, came here not to be served but to serve others, and to give my life as a ransom for many.”
Your service is a direct reflection of how you view and relate to God. So what does your reflection of service look like?
Colossians 3:23-24 – Do your work willingly, as though you were serving the Lord himself, and not just your earthly master. In fact, the Lord Christ is the one you are really serving, and you know that he will reward you.
It seems so simple, doesn’t it – serving others is part of why we are here. When asked about the most important commandment, Jesus said to Love God and to Love Others…the best way we can love others is by serving them! WILLINGLY!
Listen to the words of Peter in 1 Peter 4:10-11 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.
First – you’ve been given a gift – a gift designed to serve others. Each of you, in various forms – in all of our diversity and unique weirdness, have gifts that are design for you to share for the benefits of others.
Let’s take a look at John 16:12-15 12 I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14“He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15“All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
Jesus says – listen up – I’m not going to hand you more than you can bear…But did you hear – The Spirit of God is going to guide us into truth. But not as a puppet, but as one in a relationship with Jesus like He has with the Father. He’s saying operate and live your life like God. Like the relationship of God the Father with God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Allowing us to change and develop and serve like God desires.
That’s a BIG DEAL – So take a look at John 12:49-50 49“For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak. 50“I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me.”
He’s saying the spirit of God will tell you what to do as God tells Him…He wants you to have the same loving, serving relationship with this world in the same manor that He does…But watch this – you can’t live this life of service without this personal and meaningful relationship with God.
That’s a BIG DEAL – Yes it is! Look at John 5:19-20 19Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.
When we see Jesus, we see God the Father…but we also see who we were supposed to be. Apart from the Father we do nothing – but if I can do all of this…imagine what you could do! Not enough of a BIG DEAL yet?
John 5:30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
See that? To be fully alive is to see I am fully dependent on Him – John 8:47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
That’s a BIG DEAL! – whoever belongs to God, goes to Small Groups, Goes to Church, is Baptized – NO – Whoever belongs to God hears God and are fully alive to serve others because they have heard from God.
So if there is no clear evidence that you have heard from God – it’s because you don’t have a relationship with God.
To serve this world, to experience greatness – we are obligated to hear from God…but we cannot hear from God apart from knowing God through an intimate relationship with His Son, Jesus…
That relationship is found in the one that came to give His life as a ransom for many – remember where we began? In Christ we have a relationship with God. In that relationship, we hear from God and as we hear from God, we can do all things as we serve the world around us in Christ – Loving Him and serving Them!
